My Fitspiration From The Biggest Loser

Hannah Curlee, Me and Olivia Ward
These girls blew my mind! Meeting Biggest Loser Season 11 runner up Hannah Curlee and her sister and Winner Olivia Ward was amazing!

Every year when the State of the State address happens I have the honor of representing my station and company Time Warner Cable at the capitol. Each year the company brings in a celebrity from one of their hit shows and this year they brought in two..... Olivia and Hannah.

Here's the thing... I had no clue who they were bringing in and I'm not gonna lie... when I saw them across the room.... I squealed like a teenager and began frantically whispering to everyone around- "That's Olivia? Oh... oh my god Olivia and Hanna from the Biggest Loser?!?!" I've told you before how much I enjoy the show.

One of the organizers (a friend and colleague who shares my love of fitness) giggled and calmly said "I knew they'd be right up your alley."Heck YEAH!

I really have no filter when I meet a celeb I truly enjoy-- and as you can guess my filter was nonexistent with them when I blurted out "Ok- I'm going to be a little stalkerish right now but I LOVE YOU!" Sigh- Jeeze JoDee~! Haha Good thing is- we all laughed it off and I (somewhat) regained my composure.

I peppered them (mostly Olivia and her husband Ben) with questions the whole 2 hours we were there (in between meeting lawmakers and shaking hands of course). Meeting them came at the right time... because after the holidays you just need a boost to get back motivated!

They are the real deal- down to earth, knowledgeable and yet very humble that they work hard to keep their fitness level. They also don't beat themselves up when they're not where they want to be and instead set goals and hunker down and focus.

I asked them to offer advice to those of you who may be beginning your fitness journey and those of you who may need a little inspiration to get back on track after the holidays and here's what they had to say:

Yes- I actually gave a little squeal at the end of the interview! Yeah- I've been doing this for a long time but I still embrace the exciting moments! Haha But really- weren't they fabulous?!!?

More tips from Hannah and Olivia:

-If you travel a lot- pack healthy snacks
-If staying at a hotel- call ahead and be sure your room has a small refrigerator you can stock
-Drink lots of water
-Set a fitness goal
-Cut out the soda
-Work to be fit not skinny
-Incorporate weight training- muscle burns more fat

Olivia's husband Ben (pictured here to the right in the sweatshirt next to Time Warner Cable NY1 Anchor Lewis Doddley) was amazing to talk too. He actually lost more than 100 lbs at home- while she was on the show! He gave me some tips for the guys out there as well.

Ben's tips for the guys:

-Try CrossFit if you were a guy who enjoyed organized sports or were in the military
-Find something that you enjoy just for yourself
-Eventually incorporate your spouse, maybe you can teach her something
-Set a goal to get healthy for an event (say a vacation to a tropical destination)
-You gotta watch what you eat (exercise won't take it all off)
-Mastering your mind is the hardest part- once you do that you will make the right food and exercise choices

My mind is exploding with information right now and I wish I could have been able to record our whole conversation and play it back for you because it was so inspiring. I learned from Olivia, Ben and Hannah that they understand what it's like to struggle to make healthy decisions and sometimes they plan cheats- and THAT'S OK!

It's about putting in the work and when you fall down-- Get Right Back Up and Back On Track! This is about a healthy lifestyle- not a fad!

Looking for more Fitspiration? You're in luck! Hannah and Olivia have an amazingblog with all kinds of great information for you! Check it out! They also have a Youtube page with lots of videos and I know they are recording a whole bunch of new content today in NYC and that will be up on the internet real soon- so keep checking back in.

Also be sure to look for them on the season finale of the Biggest Loser on NBC February 4th.

Are you ready to take your fitness journey or are you ready to take your fitness to the next level? I know I am. If so- tell me about it. I'd love to hear!

Foodie Friday: Beef and Broccli

In the grand scheme of all the wonderfully dishes we have planned to tell you about- we decided to go with this one today just in case you were inspired to get fit as a result of yesterday's awesomevideo interview with the Biggest Loser Goddesses!

This classic Asian dish is delicious and can be relatively healthy if you make it at home and control the ingredients. So- here we go!Donavan... take the reins!

2 lbs thin Sliced Beef (if your knife skills are not sharp, have your butcher slice it for you)
1/4 cup Hoisin Sauce
1/4 cup Canola Oil
3 cloves Fresh Garlic (minced)
1/2 tsp Sesame Oil
1 lg Onion  (chopped or sliced)
2 lg Carrots (chopped or sliced and blanched)
3 heads of Broccoli (cut from stalk and in bit size pieces and blanched)
1 cup beef stock
1/4 cup Low Sodium Soy Sauce (use Low Sodium because the Hoisin will add salt as well)
1/4 cup Corn Starch
1/2 cup Cold Water

I suggest using a Wok to make this dish, if you do not have one use a saute pan.

A Wok is a must if you plan on cooking a lot of Asian style dishes.

Place canola oil in Wok and get it hot (when you look at the oil you should see ripples in the oil)
Add beef and cook until browned on all sides but still undercooked. Remove beef from pan and add onion, carrots, garlic, sautee until onions are translucent.

Add soy sauce and hoisin sauce to vegetable mixture, bring to a boil and then add par cooked beef back to pan.

Add beef stock (low sodium if you're watching that) and bring to a boil.

Mix corn starch and cold water and add to boiling mixture about 1 Tbsp at a time to reach the desired thickness.

Add broccoli and toss until coated and warmed through, about 3-4 minutes. If sauce is too thick add a little cold water to thin out sauce.

Serve over Rice or Lo Mien Noodles
Enjoy!

When is it time to take it down

My tree was leaning and missing ornaments in one whole chunk of the tree for longer than I'm willing to admit! It got worse and worse as the days went by. I admit- I had hoped the "Christmas Tree Fairy" would come and take mine down last week- but she didn't. So, it lingered for a week longer.

It looked so sad. Ornaments began to fall and toys under the tree seemed to be spread out farther and farther. Somehow the cat--- who never climbed it once during the holidays--- decided "well, if she's going to keep it up, I'm going to climb it daily!" Sigh....
I finally said UNCLE! Sunday was the day to clean it all up. It only took an hour. I spent more time complaining about it... figures, right?

Did you know the "traditional" day to take down your tree is January 6th? According to Christian tradition you take it down on the day of Epiphany, January 6th. But apparently people also used put their trees up Christmas eve. Most people have their trees up for much longer than that- don't you think?

Have you taken your tree down?

Brother Anthony

In an age where we head to the gym with our headphones and electronic device- it's rather rare to see someone playing the accordion with hopes of inspiring you to get moving! In fact- I'm pretty sure it's unheard of- unless you've met "Brother Anthony".

So imagine my surprise when I ran into "Brother Anthony" in the lobby of the YMCA. I have never seen him before but have come to learn brother Anthony is there everyday! I wonder how we've never crossed paths because by all accounts- we are both there all the time! Well, I was excited that all changed in such a grand fashion!

I've come to learn Brother Anthony lives "up on the hill at the seminary". That's the La Salette Seminary in Altamont New York. He comes in everyday and heads to the hot tub to soak and then heads to the lobby to tell a joke or two, talk about his cat Tulip, drink some coffee and on occasion pull out his accordion and entertain those coming and going.

On this day- he was paying tribute to those in the military. He played each branch of the military's theme song. I pulled out my camera just in time to enjoy the Army Song. His mid-day crowd was rather thin, but the couple of people who were there enjoying his tunes showed their appreciation with a smile and encouragement to continue playing.

Gotta stop and enjoy the little things people- enjoy the song!

Viral Video: Gym Stereotypes

This video cracked me up!

If you spend anytime at the gym... you can name a person for each of these stereotypes! In fact- I ran into the water drinker coming down the stairs yesterday and just about fell out laughing thinking of this video! This is the time of year were a ton on people are signing up for the gym, ready to make a change, ready to get in shape!

My gym was crowded the other day and I actually had to wait for a treadmill... gasp.. a whole 5 minutes!

In a hot split second I started to get irritated- but then I stopped myself. Here's the thing- maybe, just maybe someone who is taking that first step in my gym, right now, on the treadmill that I want to get on--- is making A REAL CHANGE! And in that realization I felt so excited for all these new people- because I used to be an on-again off-again gym goer and seemed to always start back at the first of the year! Now I'm working on year three of steady visits to the gym and I love it!

Hey- maybe I can meet a new friend.. who likes protein shakes or doesn't quite know how to use the machine right or a screamer! Watch the video and you'll understand why I'd love to meet any of those people!

Anyways they say in order to make fitness a lifestyle change- you have to do something you love and it helps to have a buddy- so the next time you see that Gallon Water Drinker at the gym strike up a conversation! You can start by asking him if it's truly bottled or just filled with tap water!

Even Cats Love Snow?

I have heard of dogs loving snow- but CATS? Yes- that's the case for my cat Boo.... or should I say my husband's cat- she chose him. I'm still a little bitter about that one- but I digress. Boo was a feral cat but we rescued her when she was maybe 3 weeks old.  She didn't really have a long time out in the wild to develop this sense of "need" to be outside--- or at least I thought!

This cat will do ANYTHING to get outside!

As you can see in this video she got outside when we got all that snow a while back and you would think it was too cold for her... NOPE! She L-O-V-E-D it! As exasperated I am with trying to prevent her from getting out-  I have to admit it was so cute seeing her frolic around in the snow!

I guess you can take the cat out of the wilderness... but not the wilderness out of the cat!

Foodie Friday: Crock Pot Cooking

Ok, I took these pictures just to text Chef hubby to tell him dinner was looking pretty good- so you will have to forgive me for not giving you some amazing food pictures to drool over. You have to understand- it was ALL GONE WHEN I REALIZED I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN PROFESSIONAL PICTURES OF THIS-- BECAUSE IT WAS BANGIN!!!

You have fast food meals but there are some days when you want to come home to a warm home cooked meal.

That's when you get a wife-- well, if you are the wife-- that's where the crock pot comes in handy.

The other day I made a recipe that was so easy and yet so delicious it would make you wanna slap yo mama! These pictures just don't do it justice- it was great. I got it off the internet and was talking with a girlfriend of mine when I told her that I have a good slow cooker book but the recipes were TOO in-depth and they were intimidating.

She pulled out the book"Crock Pot: The Original Slow Cooker". I'll admit I was hungry when I cracked it open but the next day I kept thinking about some of the recipes.

There are three books in one: chicken recipes, 5 ingredients or less and soups. All of the recipes seem very simple. I hunted it down and now own it myself. $11, Money well spent.
To make this lovely meal:

-brown Italian sausage links whole (we used sweet but you could use spicy too)
-put one can whole tomatoes in crock pot then squish them up
-submerge the whole sausage links and drippings in the tomatoes
-add 1 chopped onion
-add 3 or 4 small potatoes
-season to taste (I used salt, pepper and some garlic)
-let it cook on low for 4 hours
-the last 1/2 hour add zucchini and or squash

When this is done cooking pull out sausage, cut into circles, throw them back in and stir. Sprinkle some bread crumbs on top of served up dish with some cheese on top.

This was such an easy recipe and it was a huge hit in our home!

Gedeon Luke Featured at MLK Celebration

I have been honored to be Co-Emcee of the Annual MLK Celebration at the Empire State Plaza for the past 8 years. Each year there's a new performer who knocks your socks off! This year it was American Idol Season 5 Semi-Finalist Gedeon Luke! Check out the above video of him jamming to "We Shall Overcome" with the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church!

His rich voice filled the auditorium for a 2 song set. He sang with his group "The People" his songs "Gray" and "Live Free/Hey". Getting a chance to meet him after the show I found him energy filled and so friendly! His smile brings you in and I wanted to ask him about his skin care regime because the man had great skin. He was very approachable, gave us a cd and some stickers and seemed to be having a great time. I learned he's going to be in the Capital Region in August for a large celebration in the works. When I find out more about that I'll be sure to pass it along to you.

Being a part of this annual event is truly a blessing. I get to spend time with

some of my wonderful friends and I always bring the children with me. They get a history lesson while enjoy the acting skits and musical performances. This year we were asked to say what our dreams were for the future. I said:

I, JoDee Kenney, have a dream that we find a way to resolve conflicts peacefully, so my, our children have a brighter future. My hope is that people of this planet learn how to accept each other's differences so we pass down a safer world to our children.

Have you heard Gedeon Luke and the People's song "Gray"? It reminds me of the 70s soulful music my mom and dad used to listen to and yet it has a today spin. I was so honored to hear it in person and can't stop listening to it! Check it out!

In a world of fat free, sugar free-- sometimes the real deal, full sugar is the way to go... unless you really hate someone! In that case- I introduce you the Haribo Gummy Candy, Sugarless Gummy Bears, 5-Pound Bag! The reviews on this product are down right hilarious!

Apparently the additives that are used in this product- bring on the "gummy cleanse". More than 8-thousand people said the most helpful favorable review... which says it's"an ideal gift for your Congressional Representative"... was right on the money. The most helpful critical review was approved by more than 29-THOUSAND people and it says "Just don't. Unless it's a gift for someone you hate."

"First of all, for taste I would rate these a 5. So good. Soft, true-to-taste fruit flavors like the sugar variety...I was a happy camper.

BUT (or should I say BUTT), not long after eating about 20 of these all hell broke loose. I had a gastrointestinal experience like nothing I've ever imagined. Cramps, sweating, bloating beyond my worst nightmare."

"Do not take to sporting events!"

"Seriously, people. I don't understand all those bad reviews. I just bought a 5# bag for my ex. My ex LOVES gummy bears."

The hits just keep coming with this product. If you're looking for a great laugh- click HERE to check out all the reviews. I just can't stop laughing.

Black and Latino Achievers Spotlight

I have enjoyed telling you about the Capital District YMCA's Black and Latino Achiever Program in the past- and now I get to tell you more! My goal over the next 6 months leading up to their annual awards ceremony will be to take a day each month to highlight some of the Adult and Youth Achievers who are receiving recognition from the Y for their efforts. My hope is this will inspire you to get involved with your community.

First of all ANY teenager can participate in this program. You do not need to be only black or Latino. The name is based on its roots but the program has evolved as the need in the community has evolved. The goal is to introduce teenagers to many aspects of the real world- from college visits, to tours of professional work places (including the TWC News Station) to visits from experts in many fields including science, technology, engineering and math.  It is as rewarding for the adults as it is for the children. Take a look at this video and hear from some of the students themselves.

Today lets meet 3 adults who were honored at last year's banquet for their efforts to support the program.

Ladan Alomar, Executive Director Centro Civico of Amsterdam
Ladan Alomar has been an advocate for Latino youth for decades.  Her organization has helped families with AIDS prevention, housing for the poor, youth construction training programs and assistance for persons with disabilities.  She has been a volunteer for the Capital District YMCA Latino Youth Conference and backs this by getting youth from Amsterdam to attend.  Ladan is a committee and board member of many Capital District causes that assist the under served in our communities.

Sean Brown, New York State Department of Education
Mr. Brown has been a volunteer with many organizations that are community based:  Boys & Girls Club, Ronald McDonald House.  He is the founder of Make A Play, Incorporated.  This organization emphasizes youth development through the application of sports.  He is a board member of the Achievers program.  He has been a resource for connecting the Achievers program with other youth services organizations to maximize program impact.

Lieutenant Colonel Janice Gravely, Battalion Commander
US Army Recruiting Battalion Albany
LTC. Gravely has involved the USARMY with the Achiever program by presenting opportunities for careers in the military at branch sites and Saturday Clusters.  She has mobilized her staff to get involved in the Achievers program.  She has offered resources such as career guidance, SAT preparation workshops and online resources.  LTC Gravely is a committed volunteer with Big Brothers and Big Sisters.  She is passionate about youth development and giving youth the best opportunities.

You may remember I interviewed Dave Brown/President and CEO of the Capital District YMCA at last year's awards ceremony. I have been honored to Emcee this event for 8 years now. I am also an Adult Achiever for my efforts to help create the curriculum for the program and for working as TW Cable Diversity Ambassador For News and Local Programming to bring the workplace tour to our television station. Dave is a true champion of this program and if you didn't get a chance to watch the whole interview please take some time to hear why he feels this program is so special.

Many YMCA's across the country have this program- so if you are reading from outside of the Capital Region reach out to your local Y to see how you can get involved. If you are a professional in the Capital Region or know of a teenager who could benefit from this program contact:

Foodie Friday: Natalie’s Jerked Chicken Wings

$

I know you're beginning to think of some great snacks for your Superbowl parties! A football party isn't complete until the chicken wings arrive! So here is a recipe from our friend Natalie. She's Jamaican and knows how to jerk some chicken!

Fresh or Frozen Chicken Wings
2 Cups Oil
Jerk Seasoning (the best one is made by Walkerswood) (no measurement.  Use as needed, the more you use, the hotter the wings will taste).
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees

Place oil in a frying pan and heat it to 350 degrees.

Place wings in oil and cook, until they get a nice golden brown on the skin. (If frozen be very careful placing in oil, as the ice will "pop" the oil and cause burns).

After the wings have a nice color, remove from oil and pat dry with a paper towel.

Place wings on a cooking sheet or in an oven safe dish and cook in preheated oven until internal temperature has reached 165 degrees.

While the chicken is still hot, place Jerk Seasoning in a bowl and add chicken wings.  Toss lightly, making sure all sides of the wings are coated.

Place on a platter and serve hot. You could also put out some ranch dressing or bleu cheese dressing as a dipping sauce.

Enjoy the wings!

I'll have another great party recipe next week!

Fighting A Cold

I've been feeling great this winter- rock star status.... until Friday night. I started feeling run down- but shouldn't I feel that way? Heck it was a long week. I took some Emergen-c and went to bed. Woke up Saturday pretty stuffed up, but powered through a 2 hour workout. By Saturday night I couldn't breathe. Yep- I got the cold.

So, I'm home today trying to feel better. I found this New York Times article. The doctor said “The best remedy for the cold remains effective prevention,”- well, yeahhhh!

After I got over his statement that rubs me wrong- as I sit here trying desperately to relieve the pressure in my head- I actually learned something from it. It said to get rest- which I'm doing and get 60 to 80 oz of fluid.

The doctor also dispelled some myths. He said orange juice isn't going to help you if you have the cold! WHAT? You might be surprised there are other remedies that we swear by that the doctor says don't work. To find out some other myths- click HERE.

"Healthy Foods" Not So Healthy

Are you always looking at ways to improve your diet? I know I am. So when I saw this article from ChaCha.com I had to click through the photo gallery of 10 healthy foods that aren't so healthy. Some may come as no surprise. The super size bagel is full of sugar and carbs and as you know- one of today's bagels does not equal one serving size.

Others- like sushi- with their small portion sizes- may make you pause. The multi grain Cheerios are also on this list. Aren't they one of the better cereals to have? In the end experts will tell you your best bet if you're trying to eat healthy is eat fresh. I even heard a well known trainer once say "You'll never get fat by just snacking on vegetables".

This is a great recipe to use for a get together with friends for the big game this weekend but don't count it out for a get-together if it's just a bunch of women hanging out doing their thing!!!

It would go nice with cold beer or a cool mixed drink.

2 lbs of Boiled Chicken Breast (no skin)
1 block of Cream Cheese
1 jar of Ann Marie's Blue Cheese Dressing (in the produce section of your market)
1/2 bottle of Franks Red Hot Buffalo Wing Sauce
1 lb Shredded Cheddar Cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place Cream Cheese in a mixer and beat until smooth. Add chicken breast and mix until chicken is pulled and shredded. Add Blue Cheese Dressing and continue to mix. Add Franks Red Hot Wing Sauce to mixture and incorporate really well. Add half of the cheese to the mixture and place mixture in an oven safe container. Top with remaining cheese and place in oven until internal temperature reaches 165 degrees and the cheese is melted. Remove from oven and serve hot with crackers or tortilla chips.

Have you tried a Foodie Friday? I'd love to see a picture of your creation! Send it to me and I'll feature it here on the blog! Tweet it to me @JoDeeKenney  #FoodieFriday

Fun With Google Glasses

Yesterday I interviewed Paul Fahey COO of marketing firm Zone 5 in Albany about the winners and losers of the Super Bowl Ad game. With him was Danika Atkins/ Zone 5 Account Executive and she was wearing Google Glasses. I have seen people wearing them but never in person. I thought they were a little funky looking but never put any thought into wanting to wear them... until I saw them in person.

Think of it as: Google search, on demand, on your face! There is a little computer screen there for you to view.

Ok, Google- take a picture.
Ok, Google- look up a recipe for kung pow chicken.

How cool is this??????

I have to admit I would love to have some of these to learn more about what they do! As you could see I was fascinated and kept swiping my finger across as I wanted to explore the many options it offered.

Have you tried them? If not- you should- VERY COOL!

Foodie Friday: Creamy Tomato Basil Soup

Let's face it... we are busy! Sometimes we go all out and make a fantastic meal for our family and spend the whole day cooking- other days we want food on the table in 15 minutes. This week's recipe is dedicated to those of you who are hungry NOW- not in a couple hours!

This week's Foodie Friday is about one of my hubby's favorite things to eat. He says "It reminds me of my Mother and growing up in Texas". Of course he put a twist on because we did not keep basil and heavy cream in the house on a regular basis. Even so- it won't take you long to whip up this delicious meal!

1 Can of Campbell’s Condensed Tomato Soup
1 Soup Can of Milk or Heavy Cream
  1 tsp of Dried Thyme
2 tsp of Salt (I use Kosher but it does not matter)
1 tsp of Crushed Black Pepper
1 cup of chopped fresh Basil
    1/4 cup fine chopped Onion
  1/4 cup of Butter

Heat butter in sauce pan and saute onions until tender about 2 minutes.
Add Basil and saute until fragrant about 1 minute (do not burn, it will ruin the final product)
Add soup and milk or heavy cream and mix well.
Bring to a boil and reduce heat to a simmer and adjust with Salt and Pepper.
Serve hot with a fresh Basil leaf for garnish and a grilled cheese sandwhich!
